Crews to join race for prosecutor job

CONWAY -- Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Carol Crews has announced she will run for prosecuting attorney in the 20th Judicial Circuit.

Crews, 35, will seek the position now held by Cody Hiland, President Donald Trump's nominee for U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

Crews, who began her legal career as a deputy prosecutor in juvenile court, has worked as a full-time deputy prosecutor for 10 years. She joined the 20th Judicial Circuit in 2011 and later was promoted to senior trial attorney, then to chief deputy.

The circuit comprises Faulkner, Van Buren and Searcy counties.

In a news release, Crews said she primarily handles homicides, violent and sexual cases and crimes against children. Crews, who oversees other attorneys and staff members, also has participated in drug court and teen court.

"Our office has the reputation of being tough on repeat, violent, and sexual offenders, as well as being dedicated to being ethical and fair. We strive to seek justice, not merely win cases. This is a legacy I look forward to continuing for the people of the 20th District," Crews said.

Crews lives in Conway with her husband, Jordan, and their son, Jackson. She graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the W.H. Bowen School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

If elected, Crews would be the first woman to run the 20th Judicial Circuit prosecutor's office.

Prosecutors are elected to four-year terms in Arkansas and make $155,040 annually.

The nonpartisan election will be May 22. The filing period for candidates starts at 3 p.m. Feb. 22 and ends at 3 p.m. March 1.
