North Little Rock notebook

2 library branches

to close for training

The William F. Laman Public Library and its Argenta branch in North Little Rock will be closed Monday and Tuesday so staff members can train on new computer software, the library system announced.

The library system also said it will be updating some electronic resources for its patrons, and those will remain available while the libraries are closed.

Among online services offered is Listen Now, a new streaming audio service that allows immediate audio book listening with an Internet connection, according to a library news release. The company's Axis 360 app also is being upgraded to enhance audio book listening with playback speed controls for Android devices.

Another electronic resource is the Freegal app music streaming service, where users can download seven songs a week for free with a Laman Library card. The app has 13 million songs and 40,000 music videos available 24 hours a day, according to the news release.

More information on these and several other online services is available on the library website, lamanlibrary.org.

Brother Paul dinner

set Oct. 6 at arena

Oct. 6 is the date for the 31st annual Fish & Fowl Dinner at Verizon Arena, benefiting Brother Paul's Soup Kitchen at the Friendly Chapel Church of the Nazarene.

The all-you-can-eat dinner typically attracts thousands of patrons each year and requires several hundred volunteers to serve food and clean up.

The dinner will be 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

A book of 10 tickets costs $120. Individual tickets are $15 each. Children's tickets for ages 5-12 are $6, but must be purchased at the door for dine-in only. Prepared meals for take-out will be available with adult tickets.

The dinner was started in 1987 as a fundraiser by the late "Brother Paul" Holderfield, a pastor and former North Little Rock firefighter who founded the church at 116 S. Pine St. Paul Holderfield Jr. is now the church's pastor and continued the dinner tradition in 1998 after his father's death.

Tickets for the dinner are available by contacting the Friendly Chapel at (501) 371-0912.

City OKs $87,000

for road extension

North Little Rock's City Council approved last week adding $87,000 to the Counts Massie Road extension project in conjunction with neighboring Maumelle for design and engineering services.

The contract is with McClelland Engineers. North Little Rock's share of the cost is $61,770, with Maumelle paying $25,230.

The North Little Rock City Council approved in August a $445,131 contract for its share of the Counts Massie extension, which is intended to lead to a new entrance/exit off Interstate 40 and provide a link to Maumelle Boulevard, which traverses both cities.

"We wanted to hire the engineer who did the design work for Maumelle's part," said Nathan Hamilton, North Little Rock's communications director. "We feel more comfortable having that same outfit to keep an eye on it while construction is progressing."
