Cougars pounce on Mustangs

HELENA-WEST HELENA -- The Helena-West Helena Central Cougars never trailed as they defeated the Forrest City Mustangs (1-2) 46-16 at Cad Polk Stadium.

The Cougars (3-0), who had lost three consecutive to the Mustangs, scored on a safety with 9:33 to go in the first quarter as Forrest City tried to punt and snapped it out of the end zone.

The Cougars offense took the ensuing possession 45 yards on seven plays. Terrance Calhoun scored on a 6-yard run with 7:33 to go in the first quarter. The try for two failed and Helena-West Helena led 8-0.

The Cougars went 53 yards on 8 plays on its next possession, and Terrance Calhoun scored on a 3-yard run with 4:03 to go in the first quarter. John Oliver ran in the two-point conversion to make it 16-0.

Forrest City (1-2) cut the lead to 16-8 on a bizarre play when the Mustangs were in punt formation but the snap sailed over the punter's head. Punter James Rice scooped up the ball and ran down the left sideline for a touchdown with 1:51 to go in the first quarter

Arthur Dale ran in the two-point conversion to cut the Cougars lead, but that was as close Forrest City would get.

Helena-West Helena needed three plays to respond and go 59 yards. Demarcus Sheard scored on a 23-yard run with 47.2 seconds to go in the first quarter. The try for two failed and Helena-West Helena led 22-8.

The Cougars would add one more score before the half when Armonie Calhoun hit Keyon Burrell on a 8-yard scoring pass to cap off an 8-play drive.
