With the busy holiday season approaching, the American Red Cross encourages donors to give blood now to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this winter.

Blood Center seeks donors
Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is the sole local provider of blood for patients at 40 area hospitals in southwestern Missouri, northwestern Arkansas and southeastern Kansas. Sick and injured hospital patients depend on CBCO donors to provide the lifesaving blood they need.
CBCO will be hosting blood drives at the following location:

Weatherizationhelp offered
The Weatherization Department at Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council is seeking applicants for the Weatherization Assistance Program. Weatherization is a vital program, providing recipients with a more energy-efficient, safe and healthy home. The energy expenses of heating and cooling are reduced, allowing for more income to pay for food, medicine, clothing, child care, transportation, education and other basic necessities, all of which help to strengthen the effort to advance. The program services 14 counties, including Washington. The work is free of charge for those meeting the eligibility guidelines.

Ruddick to lecture
Margie Ruddick will present a lecture at 1 p.m. Monday in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.
Ruddick is an international, award-winning landscape designer and is the recipient of the 2013 National Design Award for landscape architecture from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
In her lecture, titled "Landscapes and Their Buildings: Conceiving the Dynamic Between the 'Natural' and Built Worlds," Ruddick will discuss how architecture is one part of a series of ecosystems. These ecosystems include not only "natural" systems, but human activity, energy systems and infrastructure, among other components of the landscape.
The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, with limited seating.

Forum on gunviolence planned
In the wake of our nation's most recent mass shooting, the League of Women Voters of Washington County will bring together a panel of experts to educate citizens on gun legislation and to discuss creative ways to save lives.
The public is invited to attend the forum from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Fayetteville Public Library. Joyce Hale, the League president, said the forum is designed to provide listeners with information about the proliferation and expanded permitting of firearms in our public spaces.
The program will include a panel discussion featuring Steve Boss, founding member of Arkansas Against Guns on Campus; Nicole Clowney, advocate for Moms Demand Action; Steve Gahagans, Chief of University of Arkansas Police Department; and state Rep. Greg Leding of Fayetteville. The panel moderator will be Ann Rosso.

Cemetery hosts open house
The Fort Smith National Cemetery invites veterans, family members and the general public to an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, 522 Garland Ave.
Cemetery staff will provide burial benefit information for veterans and spouses and discuss the new option of applying in advance for a burial eligibility determination. Staff will also be on hand to discuss other VA burial and memorial benefits, such as headstones, markers and medallions in a private cemetery, the Presidential Memorial Certificate and other new programs and offerings.

Race supports cemetery
The Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corporation is holding its ninth annual Veterans Memorial 5K Race beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Fayetteville National Cemetery, 700 S Government Blvd. Sponsors will provide shirts and goodie bags to all runners. Awards and prizes will be presented to the top overall male and female runners and to the top three male and female runners in each age group.
Entry fee is $25 early registration or $30 the day of the race. Group rates are available.

Health Mattersseries continues
Richard McWhorter, M.D. with Ozark Urology, will be the speaker as part of a Your Health Matters Presentation Series on urinary incontinence in women from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Pat Walker Center for Seniors, 12 E. Appleby Road in Fayetteville. McWhorter will discuss types of urinary incontinence, common symptoms and treatment methods. Urinary incontinence in women is common and treatable.
