Road accidents claim four lives

3 fatalities reported in 1 day

At least four people were killed in road accidents since Saturday, according to preliminary reports from the Arkansas State Police.

One person was killed and two others were hurt Monday night when a collision on Interstate 40 in Franklin County sent two vehicles off the highway, where they overturned, state police reported.

The crash happened about 8:20 p.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 25, east of Mulberry.

State police reported that a 2005 Pontiac crossed from the fast lane into the slow lane and hit a 2017 GMC. Both vehicles veered off the interstate and overturned, according to the report.

The GMC driver, Guy Holden, 68, of Chouteau, Okla., suffered fatal injuries.

A passenger in that vehicle, Patsy Holden, 68, of Chouteau, and the driver of the Pontiac, David Thomason, 31, of Bradford, were listed as injured, though the report didn't detail the extent of their injuries. At least one of them was taken to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith.

It was cloudy, but roads were dry at the time of the crash, state police reported.

Three accidents on Saturday killed three other people.

A 32-year-old Missouri man died Saturday night when his sport utility vehicle ran off a highway in Baxter County and overturned, police said.

About 10:15 p.m., Sean Rothenberger of Bakersfield, Mo., was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer south on Arkansas 101, according to a state police report.

The Trailblazer ran off the east side of the highway and overturned, throwing Rothenberger out, the report said.

The report didn't indicate what may have caused the vehicle the leave the road.

A Jonesboro woman was fatally struck by a car Saturday night after she ran out into the road, authorities said.

Carolyn Wooden, 49, died after being hit around 9:30 p.m. by a Kia Soul on Johnson Street near Patrick Street in Jonesboro, according to a state police report.

Police said the Kia was traveling west when Wooden "ran into the roadway in front of" it and was hit. The driver was unhurt, according to the report.

The report didn't say why Wooden may have run into the road.

A Cave City woman died Saturday when her vehicle ran off a road and overturned, authorities said.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., LaDonna Bailey, 44, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet east on Arkansas 56 in Sharp County when she went off the road on a curve, according to a state police report.

Bailey then overcorrected, causing the Chevrolet to overturn and stop on the north side of the highway, the report said.

Bailey suffered fatal injuries.

The weather was clear and roads were dry at the time of all three Saturday accidents, state police said.
