HELENA-WEST HELENA -- Stuttgart's 29-point second quarter turned a close game into a rout of Helena-West Helena Central in a 2-4A game at Cad Polk Stadium.

Stuttgart (5-3, 4-1 2-4A) scored on the its first possession of the second quarter when Kirk Hughes ran it in for to cap off an 8-play, 58-yard drive. Tim Johnson's extra point made it 14-8 with 10:26 to go in the first half.

The Ricebirds forced a punt and reached the Cougars 21, facing a 4th and 6. Johnson hit Davion Graham for a scoring pass that capped off a 9-play, 64-yard drive. Stuttgart faked the kick and Johnson passed to Davian Mayo to make it 22-8 with 5:30 to go in the first half.

Stuttgart got a big play after forcing another punt from the Cougars. Johnson hit Keondrae Davis for a 56-yard scoring toss to cap off a 3-play, 82-yard drive with 3:48 to go in the first half.

The Cougars (6-2, 3-2) drove inside the Stuttgart 20 and appeared to be ready to score before halftime. But Stuttgart's David Walker intercepted a pass with 33 seconds to go and returned the ball to the Helena-West Helana 10.

QB Tim Johnson circled out of the backfield to pull in a 19-yard touchdown pass with 8.5 seconds left. Johnson nailed the extra point to make it 36-8 at halftime.

Stuttgart invoked the mercy rule with 8:40 to go in the third quarter by taking the opening possession of the second half 66 yards on 6 plays. Graham scored on a 4-yard run. Johnson kicked the extra point to round out the scoring as the clock ran nonstop with the Ricebirds up, 43-8
