UA to slash tuition of islands' students

FAYETTEVILLE -- The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville will offer discounted tuition at the in-state resident level to students from Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands after hurricanes that battered the U.S. territories.

UA spokesman Steve Voorhies said two students from Puerto Rico attend the university. No current students are from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Voorhies said.

"In a time of a natural disaster like this the University of Arkansas has a responsibility to reach out to those in higher education who are trying to put their lives back together and move forward," Chancellor Joe Steinmetz said in a statement.

The in-state tuition will be offered for the coming spring semester as well as the 2018 summer and fall semesters. For the current academic year, in-state undergraduate tuition for a typical schedule is $7,384 compared with $22,630 for out-of-state students, though many students from outside Arkansas receive discounts from that rate as part of various UA scholarship programs.
