SOCCER

Goins leads Hogs to victory

Parker Goins scored the game's lone goal in the 10th minute Thursday to lead the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville women to a 1-0 victory over LSU in Baton Rouge.

Goins scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year off a deflection from 10 yards out. Arkansas (8-7-1, 3-3-1 SEC) held LSU (8-4-2, 1-4-2) to nine shots in the match and only three shots on goal. Jordan Harris picked up her fifth victory in goal and had three saves.

It's the seventh time in their eight victories that the Razorbacks have won with a shutout.

VOLLEYBALL

Anderson strong for UCA

Samantha Anderson had a match-high 21 kills, 6 blocks and 3 digs Thursday as the University of Central Arkansas defeated Nicholls State 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 25-27, 25-15) in Thibodaux, La.

Haley Tippett had 12 kills and 10 digs for the Sugar Bears (17-2, 6-1 Southland Conference), while Megan Nash chipped in with 10 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks.

Stephanie Tobison led Nicholls State (3-18, 1-7 Southland) with 16 kills and Emily Venable had 14 digs.

UAFS sweeps Newman

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith remained the only undefeated team in the Heartland Conference with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-14) victory over Newman on Thursday at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan.

Pulotu Manoa had 11 kills for the Lady Lions (17-5, 6-0 Heartland), while Anna Demmer, Debra Rogers and Rachel Williams had 10 each. Susannah Kelley had 39 assists and served the only ace for UAFS, which has won 43 consecutive regular season conference matches.

Anna Burton led Newman with 16 digs, Hailey Braddy had 13 kills and Reagan Roth had 27 assists.

BASKETBALL

Lyon adds Norfork's Dodson

Marleigh Dodson, a 6-1 guard/forward from Norfork, has signed a letter of intent to play at Lyon College in Batesville next season.

Dodson, who was an all-state selection last season, led the Lady Panthers to a 41-2 record and a state semifinal berth.

"I really love the combination of her size and her skills," Lyon Coach Tracy Stewart-Lange said. "One of the best aspects of her game is on-the-ball defense and her ability to play passing lanes. She's worked really hard in the offseason on her three-point shot."

Lyon went 28-6 last season and advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.

GOLF

Banger, Leed earn GAC honors

Harding's Mason Banger and Southern Arkansas' Helle Leed were named the Great American Conference's Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week on Thursday.

Leed won medalist honors and helped the Lady Muleriders finish in a tie for third at the GAC Preview in Oklahoma City.

Banger led the Bisons to the team victory at the Holiday Inn Express Classic in St. Joseph, Mo., finishing second individually. He opened the tournament with a 4-under-par 67, which tied his career low.

ATHLETICS

University of the Ozarks to induct four

Pitcher Steve Higgins, athletic trainer Donald Kessler, former high school football coach George Loss and four-time all-conference soccer player Lindy Swatzell Mantooth will be inducted into the University of the Ozarks Sports Hall of Fame today in a ceremony at the Rogers Conference Center in Clarksville.

Higgins led the Arkansas Intercollegiate Confernece in strikeouts (70) in 1978 and was a three-time all-conference selection, earning the honor as a designated hitter and pitcher in 1979.

Kessler has over 40 years of athletic training experience at the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels. He's currently the athletic trainer for the United States Navy Seals.

Loss built a 116-15-3 record at St. Anne's Academy in Fort Smith, including winning 44 consecutive games, before winning a state championship at Little Rock Catholic in 1968. He also coached at Bryant and North Little Rock.

Mantooth was a four-time all-conference selection who owns the school record for career goals (42) and career points (95). Her single-season record include most goals (21) and most points (46).
