Little Instrument, Big Sound

Ukulele player offers surprising spirit

Posted: October 13, 2017 at 1 a.m.

At Wednesday’s performance at the Walton Arts Center, listeners will find a balance between traditional and contemporary Hawaiian songs, as well as some popular pieces ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro has become known for adapting to his instrument. Songs like Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” — the song that made Shimabukuro a viral YouTube sensation — are nearly always part of his set.

What comes to mind at the mention of a dynamic, evocative instrument? The piano? The violin? How about the ukulele?
