Vladimir Putin, the Russian president known for his love of dogs, received as a 65th-birthday present a Central Asian shepherd puppy named Verny -- Russian for "loyal" -- from the president of Turkmenistan.

Dawn Peppinger, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman, said a 300-pound black bear was killed by police after it wandered into an Anchorage, Alaska, post office where about 75 employees were sorting mail.
