• Dawn Panepinto, a Tangipahoa Parish, La., sheriff's spokesman, said an 8-month-old boy left in a car died after his guardian went to work for 8½ hours, thinking she had dropped him off at day care, on a day when temperatures hit 90 degrees.
• Jessica Lawrence Wallin, police spokesman in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., said none of the 19 children on board a school bus was hurt when a bullet from a shootout at a nearby gas station shattered one of the vehicle's windows.
• Pete Piringer, fire agency spokesman in Montgomery County, Md., said crews believe that a beehive near Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg is the source of bees that stung some students, leaving 30 teens under evaluation and putting three in the hospital.
