Arkansas mother faces first-degree murder charge in toddler's death

A Monticello woman was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday in the death of her 19-month-old child, according to authorities.

The Monticello Police Department and the Arkansas State Police arrested Kannika Jenkins, 26, about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The investigation began Aug. 30 when the child was taken to Drew Memorial Hospital and died shortly after. Authorities have not said how the child died.

Investigators with the Monticello Police Department did not respond to a request for the arrest warrant as of late Wednesday. A representative with the office of Drew County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Deen said the office was not yet in possession of the case file.

The child's body was sent to the state Crime Laboratory, which declared the death a homicide, according to a news release from the Monticello Police Department.
