NWA Democrat-Gazette/LARA JO HIGHTOWER The Tuesday birthday celebration for the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is a rare chance for visitors to see the grounds at sunset, says communications coordinator Liz Atwell.

From 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, supporters of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks are invited to sing "Happy Birthday" to the nature sanctuary, which turns 10 years old this year.

"We're having a birthday party for the gardens," says Liz Atwell, communications coordinator for the organization. "Normally, we close at 5 p.m., but we're going to open up in the evening for free to let folks come out and celebrate with us."

Atwell says Yarnell's ice cream will be available while supplies last, a D.J. will be providing music, a photo booth will be on the premises, and an artist will be making balloon flowers for the kids.

"We're hoping that once people are off of work they can bring their families and maybe a picnic out here," says Atwell. "The garden looks amazing in the fall. The horticulture team says fall is their favorite season as far as the colors that are available."

Atwell also points out that it's a rare chance for visitors to see the gardens at sunset.

The BGO first opened to the public in October 2007, though planning and brainstorming for the garden first started in 1993.

"This is a very long passion project for a lot of people," says Atwell. "And we're so grateful to them. We're staffed mostly by volunteers, and we wouldn't be where we are today without the dedication of the people who care about us and want to support and help us to grow."
