BASEBALL

Travs announce opening day

The Arkansas Travelers announced Wednesday that the team will open its 12th season at Dickey-Stephens Park at 7:10 p.m. April 5 against the San Antonio Missions.

The game is the first of a six-game, six-day homestand that ends against the Corpus Christi Hooks on April 10.

The Travs announced other key dates: 11 a.m. Kids Days on April 10 and April 24; Faith and Family Night on May 5; and Pyro in the Park III on Aug. 24.

TENNIS

Little Rock area to host USTA championship

USTA Southern will host its first USTA League sectional championship in Arkansas in more than 10 years beginning Friday.

The USTA Southern Mixed Doubles Sectional Championships will be played at the Burns Park Tennis Center in North Little Rock and the Rebsamen Tennis Center in Little Rock.

There are 69 teams with approximately 630 players expected to compete in 10 levels. Teams begin play in a round-robin format, and winners of most flights will meet Monday in the finals at the Burns Park Tennis Center.

Teams will play for the right to represent USTA Southern at the USTA League Mixed Doubles National Championships in Mobile, Ala., in November.

UAM tops Mississippi Valley State

Maggie Pyles had 19 kills and compiled a .447 hitting percentage to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello to a 25-19, 25-19, 27-25 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday in Ittla Bena, Miss.

Toryn Cox had 19 assists and Kendall Vondra 16, while Macy Mitchell tallied 19 digs.

GOLF

ATU's Piddon named golfer of week

Arkansas Tech University junior Peerada Piddon won her third Great American Conference Golfer of the Week award in four weeks after she led the Golden Suns at the UCO RCB Bank Classic title.

Piddon earned her first tournament victory at Arkansas Tech after she shot rounds of 72 and 67 to finish two shots clear of the field. The 4-under 67 represented the lowest round of her career. She had finished in the top 10 in all four fall events.

Cross Country

SAU's Watson selected runner of week

Southern Arkansas University's Cole Watson has been named GAC Men's Runner of the Week.

Watson, a sophomore, turned in a personal-best time of 32:44.9 at Saturday's Chile Pepper Festival. He beat his previous-best 10K time by more than two minutes.
