Broyles Award semifinalists announced

Four SEC assistant coaches are among the 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, announced Tuesday by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation.

The award goes to the top assistant coach in college football. The winner will be announced at a luncheon Dec. 5 at the Little Rock Marriott.

Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll, Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, and Mississippi State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Todd Grantham are the four SEC assistant coaches who are part of the semifinalists group.

Other nominees include Clemson co-offensive coordinator/running backs coach Tony Elliott, Iowa State defensive coordinator/safeties coach Jon Heacock, Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, Notre Dame defensive coordinator Mike Elko, Oklahoma offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, TCU defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow, Central Florida offensive coordinator Troy Walters, Southern California offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Tee Martin, Washington defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski, Washington State defensive coordinator/secondary coach Alex Grinch, and Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

None of the 15 semifinalists have been finalists for the award.

An 18-member selection committee will pick five finalists.

BASKETBALL

UAM men dominant

The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's team had five players with 10 or more points Tuesday, led by Tyrin Jones' 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor, in a 110-59 victory over Texas College at Steelman Field House in Monticello.

Karim Mawuenyega had 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Boll Weevils (4-1), while Troy Thomas scored 17, Cobe Goosby added 15 and Derylton Hill chipped in 11. Cedric Carson led Texas College (1-4) with 12 points.

OBU men cruise at home

Mahlon Martin scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 3 of 6 three-pointers, to lead the Ouachita Baptist University men to an 88-47 victory over Ecclesia College on Tuesday in Arkadelphia.

Matt Stanley added 12 points for the Tigers (3-1), who outrebounded the Royals 44-32 and held a 50-10 advantage in points in the lane. OBU also had 19 points off turnovers, 20 second-chance points and 40 points off the bench. Chris White led Ecclesia (0-10) with 16 points.

Harding men lose

The Harding University men had four players with 10 or more points Tuesday, but it wasn't enough to overcome Jeff Larkin's game-high 31 points as Christian Brothers remained undefeated with a 79-71 victory in Memphis.

Preston Anderson led the Bisons (0-3) with 16 points, J.P. Brandon had 15, Tim Wagner added 12 and Braden Eggleston scored 10. Joe Laravie scored 21 points for the Buccaneers (5-0), and Adam Dieball had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Golden Suns dominate at home

Jacie Higgins scored a game-high 18 points to lead four Arkansas Tech University players with 10 or more points in a 92-45 victory over Mississippi College on Tuesday at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

Jayana Sanders had 16 points for the Golden Suns (4-0), while Ke'vonshaye Stackhouse added 14 and Taylor Ely chipped in 12. Ieisha Lacey led Mississippi College (2-1) with 16 points.

UAM women get road victory

Charli Swift scored 11 points and Brittnee Broadway added 10 -- both on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor -- as the University of Arkansas at Monticello women (3-2) earned a 42-40 victory over Christian Brothers (1-3) on Tuesday in Memphis.

The Cotton Blossoms overcame 21 percent shooting from the floor in the second half by holding the Lady Buccaneers to 25 percent. Rafaella Angelidou led Christian Brothers with 11 points.

Samuel leads WBC women to victory

Blessing Samuel's 21 points and 15 rebounds -- both career highs -- led the Williams Baptist College women to a 58-56 victory over Blue Mountain (Tenn.) on Tuesday at the Southerland-Mabee Center in Walnut Ridge.

Williams Baptist (3-3) outrebounded Blue Mountain 36-29, including a 16-9 edge in offensive rebounds. The Lady Eagles also had advantages in points in the lane (30-8) and fast-break points (10-4).
