• Benny Jackson, negro, aged 24, was shot and seriously injured by Essie Lee, negress, aged 18, at Ninth street and Broadway at 9:30 last night. Jackson was taken to the city hospital in the police patrol. His condition is reported as serious. According to the negress, she and Jackson had been living together for a year and two months, although not married. They roomed at 903 Spring street. Essie told the police that Jackson always took her money from her and if she did not have a certain sum every week, he would beat her unmercifully. She said that she stood it as long as she could.

HOT SPRINGS -- Hot Springs chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, held its annual program on National Defense in the home of Mrs. Ronald Cazert. Dr. Stuart Bennett, retired Air Force chaplain and associate minister of Westminister Presbyterian Church, was introduced by Mrs. John F. Karber, chapter chairman of national defense. Mrs. Herman Platz presided, and Mrs. Clifton E. Grim Jr. was welcomed as a member. The President General's November message was read by Mrs. E. C. Harbur.

• The Los Angeles Raiders starter shirt cost $55. The Little Rock couple accused of killing Jessie Williams in a dispute over it were convicted Thursday of murder by jurors who recommended that they serve prison sentences of 30 and 15 years, respectively. Kenneth Anthony Banks, 30, and Debra Ann Faulkner, 29, had faced life in prison if convicted of capital murder in the Nov. 5, 1991, shooting death of Williams on his front porch. The shooting occurred at Williams' 8621 Base Line Road apartment.

PINE BLUFF -- A Pine Bluff woman who police say tried to kill her 12-day-old son was ordered held in the Jefferson County jail Monday on a criminal attempted capital murder charge. Tonya Alice Reaves, 23, is accused of beating her son Ethan, who was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff on Saturday with a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a broken arm, a stab wound in the back and injuries to the face and head, Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kyle Hunter said at a probable cause hearing Monday in Jefferson County Circuit Court. Police say the child was also choked.
