WILMOT -- Frank Clingman, aged 30, manager of the local telephone company, was shot and instantly killed by Sam Johnson, a negro, at the latter's home about 9 o'clock last night. The negro says he shot Clingman just as the white man opened the front door and started into the house. One charge of shot entered Clingman's body just above the heart. The negro surrendered to Deputy Sheriff W. N. Wilhite shortly after the killing and was taken to the Hamburg jail to await his preliminary trial Friday on a charge of murder.

• The Kiwanis Club of Little Rock opened its 33rd annual minstrels Sunday afternoon at the Auditorium with about as jam-packed a show as the near capacity crowd could remember. They even had an act going in the lobby during intermission. It was the traditional unsophisticated, low comedy minstrel fare, the kind that amateurs bring off best, and the audience ate it up, from the hokey grand opera skit and the men dressed as women to Oscar Alagood's entrance onstage swinging on a rope like a diminutive Tarzan.

• Police were investigating the shooting death Thursday night of a 14-year-old Little Rock boy at 3200 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Lt. Charles Holladay, police spokesman, said the shooting occurred about 8:15 p.m. Holladay said the 14-year-old and a 12-year-old relative apparently were playing with guns -- a 30-30-caliber rifle and what was believed to be a .22 caliber pistol. People in an adjacent room heard a shot and found the 14-year-old wounded when they went into the room, he said. Police said the youth was dead when they arrived at the home.

• The last time Wesley Britt saw his friend Juelius Bealer, the two had just finished giving a rap performance at the Pine Bluff Convention Center, where they opened for hip-hop artist Lil' Boosie. Hours later, at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Bealer was found shot to death in the kitchen of his mother's apartment at the Madison Heights apartment complex in Little Rock. Police found a duffel bag full of suspected marijuana at the scene. Britt said he didn't know anything about the drugs. When he and Bealer parted, Bealer seemed to be focused on his music, Britt said.
