Bauxite teacher to run for seat in state House

A Bauxite Elementary School teacher, Dustin Parsons of Benton, said he's running for the Democratic nomination in House District 28 next year.

Rep. Kim Hammers, R-Benton, now represents House District 28, which includes part of Benton, Bauxite, Haskell and Traskwood.

In October 2016, Hammer announced that he would seek election next year to the Senate District 33 seat held by Republican Jeremy Hutchinson of Little Rock.

In September of this year, Hutchinson confirmed that he is not seeking re-election, and East End Democrat Melissa Fults said she would seek the Senate post that represents part of Pulaski and Saline counties.

This week, Parsons announced his bid for House District 28. He said in a news release that he decided to run for state representative "to ensure equity for all children and their families by putting them first in a visionary educational system that looks to the rest of the 21st century."

Benton Republicans Kerry Murphy and Jasen Kelly already have announced their intention to seek the House District 28 seat. Murphy owns a gun-show company. Kelly is chief executive officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Saline County.

For the 2018 election, the filing period for state and federal offices will be Feb. 22-March 1. The primary will be May 22 and the general election will be Nov. 6, 2018.
