FORT SMITH -- Isaiah Joe became the first Fort Smith Northside player to sign a letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in more than three decades on Wednesday.

Joe, a senior guard who led Northside to the Class 7A state title last season, signed his letter in front of a large crowd in Kaundart Fieldhouse.

"Fort Smith hasn't had anybody sign with the Razorbacks in a long time," Northside coach Eric Burnett said prior to Wednesday's signing ceremony. "I was looking that up today. It's been a long time. This is great for the community, it's great for Northside High School, it's great for Isaiah and his family to have this opportunity.

"I can promise you we are very excited about this opportunity for him."

Joe averaged 18.8 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game last season for the Grizzlies.
