FAYETTEVILLE -- Work on a couple of medians will cause lane closures starting Wednesday.

Transportation crews will work on the medians at Garland Avenue between West Holly Street and Melmar Drive and College Avenue between Lafayette and Dickson streets. Work will continue until Nov. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. North- and southbound lanes next to the medians will be closed.

The medians were selected for a maintenance pilot project last year comparing native plants and milkweed to turf grass. The approach for the College Avenue medians proved more successful than the Garland Avenue medians because of previous maintenance, topsoil quality and using gallon-sized plants instead of seeds, according to a news release.

Transportation Department staff will continue to work with the city's urban forestry staff on the Garland Avenue medians to minimize weeds while establishing healthy natives, the release states.
