Garret Nichols, 30, of 5531 Walden St. in Lowell was arrested Sunday. He planned to use the fake money to pay for an accomplice's bail, police said.

Nichols was arrested in connection with forgery, criminal possession of a forgery device, possession of methamphetamine with the purpose of delivering, possession of counterfeit substance with the purpose of delivering, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with physical evidence.

Nichols was part of a police investigation into counterfeit $10 and $20 bills distributed to businesses and residents, police said in preliminary reports.

April Stults, 26, and Mary King, 47, both of Fayetteville, were arrested Saturday in connection with forgery.

King told police she paid debts with the fake money Stults gave her, according to a report.

During the investigation, police found fake bills and printer cartridges in a trash bin behind Stults' apartment building, according to the report. A witness told police Stults had fake money inside her apartment, the report says.

Nichols took items from Stults' apartment Sunday. During a traffic stop, police found him with two printers, according to a report. Nichols told police Stults had been printing "funny money," so he took the printers after her arrest to keep Stults from getting into trouble, the report shows.

Nichols said he helped pass fake money and he sold meth, according to the report.

Nichols was at the Washington County Detention Center with a $7,500 bond Monday.

Stults and King were at the detention center Monday with $4,085 and $3,820 in bonds, respectively.
