After Arkansas police officer shot multiple times, lawmen go to aid of colleague, slay rifle-toter

A 44-year-old man who shot a Batesville police officer Friday night was fatally shot by other officers who responded to the residence, the Arkansas State Police said Saturday.

Marvin Stair opened fire after a police officer was sent to a home on Neeley Street around 7:40 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the state police. Batesville Police Chief Alan Cockrill said Saturday that the call appeared to be for a domestic disturbance.

The officer, identified by Cockrill as 31-year-old Michael Dickinson, was immediately fired at by Stair after his arrival and struck multiple times, according to the state police release.

Dickinson returned fire, found cover and called for assistance, the state police said. As more officers arrived, Stair appeared in the doorway and pointed a rifle at them, the state police said.

Officers opened fire, striking Stair, who died at the scene.

Dickinson remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition Saturday evening, Cockrill said. He is undergoing a second surgery, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening, the chief said.

Dickinson has been with the Batesville department since it became operational June 1, 2015, Cockrill said. He is married and has no children.

The state police did not disclose how many officers opened fire on Stair, citing the ongoing investigation. Cockrill said one officer, whom he declined to name, was placed on administrative leave after the shooting.

Stair's body will be sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for examination, the state police said.
