West Fork man dies in Wheeler crane accident

WHEELER -- A man died after being hit by a large crane, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Central Emergency Medical Service was called Thursday afternoon about an unresponsive male at 17614 Clear Water Road in the Wheeler community, according to a Sheriff's Office news release Friday.

Employees with Multi-Craft Contractors were setting up a large crane to work on a radio tower. The crane was set and leveled, and the employees were putting the boom together, according to the release.

During the set-up, a 25-foot-long piece of the crane fell, hitting Clarence "Cory" Hale, 48, of West Fork and pinning him to the ground, according to the release.

Hale was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville where he died from his injuries, according to the release.

The body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to confirm cause of death.
