Baseball: Frisco emerges with two wins over Naturals

FAYETTEVILLE -- Kid's Day turned into a bad day for Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday at Arvest Ballpark.

Frisco defeated Northwest Arkansas 8-5 after the RoughRiders completed a comeback 7-6 victory over the Naturals in a game suspended from Tuesday night after the lights failed at Arvest Ballpark. The two defeats came before a crowd of 6,026, including busloads of school children.

Luke Tendler and Jose Trevino hit home runs for Frisco (21-25) in the game scheduled for Wednesday, to give their squad a 6-2 lead after five innings. Northwest Arkansas (22-22) closed to within 6-5 before the RoughRiders pulled away again with two runs in the ninth inning.

Frisco outhit Northwest Arkansas 12-10, and the Naturals made three of the four errors in the game.

"In the suspended game, we didn't come out very good and they did," Northwest Arkansas Manager Vance Wilson said. "Certainly, we didn't pitch well. Then, we get back in it and our defense let's us down."

Frisco took command with three runs in the third inning against Northwest Arkansas starter Matt Tenuta. Scott Heineman and Jose Cardona hit consecutive doubles, Isiah Kiner-Falefa added an RBI single, and a third run scored on a fielding error at third by Jack Lopez.

Zane Evans and Mauricio Ramos hit home runs for Northwest Arkansas.

Frisco overcame a 6-2 deficit to beat the Naturals 7-6 in the completion of a Tuesday's suspended game. Tendler tied the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning after play resumed in the fifth. The RoughRiders took the lead for good in the ninth inning on a run-scoring single by Kiner-Falefa. Northwest Arkansas placed a runner at third base in the bottom of the ninth but did not score.

Alfredo Escalera had a three-double double to lead the Naturals.

SHORT HOPS

• Catcher Luis Villegas was added to the Northwest Arkansas roster after the Naturals placed Alan de San Miguel on the 10-day disabled list. de San Miguel injured his leg when running the bases on Tuesday night.

Villegas batted .276 with 5 home runs and 25 RBI last season at Class A Wilmington.

• The bat of Alfredo Escalera split in two during his single to left field in the first inning. Half of the bat landed along the third base line while the other half landed to the right of the batter's box. No one was hurt and Escalera continued to first base.

• Frisco third baseman Juremi Profar is the younger brother of Jurickson, a one-time hotshot prospect for the Texas Rangers. Jurickson Profar was rated the organization's No. 2 prospect and hit a home run in his first appearance for the Rangers in 2011. But he's struggled to regain his form and is now a reserve with the Rangers after missimg two seasons because of a shoulder injury.

On Deck: The series continues tonight with Ashton Goudeau (2-3, 3.29 ERA) making the start for Northwest Arkansas against Ariel Juardo (4-3, 3.96 ERA) for the RoughRiders. Both are right-handers. Goudeau took the loss in an 8-2 defeat against Springfield on May 20.
