SPRINGTIME RHYMES

Hats, laughs, cheers, tears at Salvation Army luncheon

Good food, a humorous speech, a fun parade and a tearful goodbye accompanied Bonnets and Sonnets, the Spring Fling Luncheon sponsored by the Salvation Army Central Command Women's Auxiliary. The event was held April 24 at the Salvation Army Worship Center in North Little Rock. KARK morning anchor Mallory Brooks was master of ceremonies.

Printed programs included sonnets by auxiliary members as well as Arkansas poet laureate Peggy Vining, who was a special guest.

A light meal was provided by Golden Corral and Trio's. KTHV news anchor Craig O'Neill kept the audience laughing with anecdotes and imitations (and origins) of the characters he has portrayed during his multifaceted broadcast career. Afterward, those with specially marked programs were asked to don the spring hats serving as table centerpieces and participate in a parade while O'Neill sang "Spring Fling Parade" (to the tune "Easter Parade").

During her closing remarks, Salvation Army Major DeeAnn Glick became emotional while speaking of the impending departure of herself and her husband, Major Roger Glick, for an assignment in Birmingham, Ala. The couple have spent four years heading Central Arkansas Command.

The luncheon raised an estimated $2,000, according to decorations chairman Mary Hardin. The money will be used to send children to the Salvation Army's Divisional Youth Camp.
