Capital City Classic 10K run takes off Saturday at park

The Capital City Classic 10K will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Two Rivers Park, 6900 Two Rivers Park Road, Little Rock.

It is the seventh race in the 2017 Arkansas Road Runners Club of America Grand Prix and functions as the championship race for the 10K distance.

For online registration, go to runsignup.com and search Capital City Classic 10K. Online registration is available until 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

The website states (and this reporter can verify) that the course is flat and fast. It's an excellent opportunity to set a personal record time in the 10K.

Packet pickup will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Rock City Running, 10300 North Rodney Parham Road, Suite D3, Little Rock.

Author's Note

My timing chip malfunctioned during the 2017 Little Rock Marathon, leaving me with only my gun-time. To complicate matters, due to the weather I had a trash bag covering my bib number at the start of the race.

The timing crew (Start2Finish Event Management) looked me up on camera. Based on the description "man in black trash bag and black headband," they found an image of me crossing the starting line and fixed my chip-time by a little over two minutes. In the real world that means nothing, but it bumped me under my goal time of five hours.

It's hard to explain the emotional shift from crushing disappointment at barely missing the mark to elation at doing exactly what I set out to do. There's probably a profound statement in there about the neurotic mindset of at least this particular runner. A minute over my imaginary line was a hard fail, but a minute under and I'm Usain Bolt wearing Hermes' winged shoes.

The organizers and timers absolutely didn't have to put forth the effort to do that for me. It was above and beyond, particularly for 939th place. Thank you.
