Sick children will have another treatment option when Arkansas Childrens Northwest opens early next year.

The state's only children's hospital announced in August 2015 plans to build a 233,613-square-foot medical center on 37 acres of land donated by Gary and Robin George and David and Cathy Evans near Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.

"Our focus is really to keep patients and kids as close to home as possible," Dr. Jay Deshpande, Arkansas Children's Hospital chief medical officer, said at the time of the announcement. "It's easier on the patient, and parents won't have to miss a day or two of work."

The Arkansas Children's Hospital Foundation has raised $59.8 million for the project that is expected to cost $427.7 million in construction, technology, equipment and operating expenses over the next five years.

Marcy Doderer, Arkansas Children's Hospital CEO, said in 2015 the Springdale hospital is meant to augment care already available in Northwest Arkansas.

"The vision is to create a destination for families that's not just for health care, but for health," she said.
