Man died at hospital after being arrested in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- A man who was taken to the hospital Monday night while in police custody died Tuesday morning, Sgt. Craig Stout said Wednesday.

Police arrested Phillip Jerriel Moore, 23, of Fayetteville, for a traffic violation at South West Avenue and West Prairie Street, according to a news release. The officer searched the vehicle after smelling marijuana, and Moore fled.

Police quickly found him hiding in brush along the railroad tracks at South University Avenue and arrested him without incident, according to the news release.

Moore told a police officer "his legs weren't working," and he was having trouble breathing, according to the release.

Central EMS employees evaluated Moore and said he could be taken to the Washington County Detention Center, but Moore stopped talking to police on the way to the jail. Police called Central EMS again and Moore was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center, according to the news release.

Moore previously lived in El Dorado. His body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine cause of death, Stout said.

The Police Department is conducting an internal investigation and requested the Washington County Sheriff's Office investigate the incident to confirm there was no wrongdoing, said Kelly Cantrell, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.
