2 nonprofits receive backing from city

The City Council last week approved about $100,000 for two nonprofits in North Little Rock for programs to provide opportunities and mentoring to city youths.

The North Little Rock Police Athletic League is allocated $46,650 for a variety of sports programs, classes and other activities aimed at benefiting at-risk youths. The organization offers free football, baseball, softball, tennis and tae kwon do programs for youths, with city police officers serving as volunteers to coach or lead the activities.

The allocation for International Development Services is $54,000 to pay for a mentoring program and various free recreational activities for ages 13-18, using a volunteer staff.

The amounts for both programs are included in the city's 2017 general fund budget. The City Council must still approve program agreements with nonprofits to allocate the funding.
