Spring Fling 5K nears; quelling big race tears

The Spring Fling 5K will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday at Cabot High School, 401 N. Lincoln St. in Cabot.

The usual 1K kids run won't follow the 5K this time. It will be at the school at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Online registration is open for both events until 9 p.m. Thursday. The 5K fee is $20; the kids run is $10. A family of up to four can register for the 5K for $50.

Packet pickup and in-person registration will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Rock City Running, 10300 N. Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock. Another packet pickup and registration will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cabot High during the kids 1K.

The Spring Fling 5K is the sixth race in the Arkansas RRCA Grand Prix Series.

My Little Rock Marathon

I was just past 24 miles in when I hit the wall. I was trudging up the two big hills on Cantrell Road by Episcopal Collegiate School and questioning the poor decision-making that had gotten me to that point.

It's strange walking that part of the race, because spectators have more time to speak with you rather than just saying a quick "Good job."

Several people (including runners passing me) reminded me that there was little more than a mile left. I refrained from telling them I knew exactly how far I was from the finish line, in painstaking detail.

One kind soul decided to go with, "So, you learn something new every marathon, what did you learn this time?"

My response was, "I learned that I don't care if it takes me the rest of the time, I'll finish. But I don't do enough training on hills."

He thought that was hilarious, and had I not been close to tears, I might have thought it was funny, too.
