Miss America shares story

Luis Martinez, Northwest Arkansas Community College graduate and scholarship donor, told those gathered for the school's scholarship luncheon on Feb. 22, "You all support our dream of getting higher education."

The annual gathering, hosted by Northwest Arkansas Community College Foundation at the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies on the Bentonville campus, gives scholarship donors, college administration and faculty and students an opportunity to get to know each other.

The school has awarded 260 privately funded scholarships worth $196,000 for the 2016-17 academic year.

The foundation's Plant a Seed Gala will be April 27 at Brightwater: A Center for the Study of Food in Bentonville. Brightwater houses the school's Culinary Arts Program.

Those gathering in honor of giving included Melba Shewmaker, Daniel Shewmaker, Jerry Vest Mauricio Herrera, Jane and Keven Anderson, Cindy Beeman, Lisa Anderson, Ben and EvaLena Mayo and Kathryn Birkhead.

The Go Red for Women's Health luncheon Feb. 23 drew more than 1,000 American Heart Association supporters to the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers. The 14th annual event helped the nonprofit organization raise nearly $500,000.

The morning portion of the fundraiser included the Purse-onality purse auction and health screenings and concluded with lunch and keynote speaker Savvy Shields, Miss America.

Shields, a Fayetteville native, shared with guests about "my shiny hat and how I got here" and her platform, "Eat Better, Live Better," which emphasizes eating foods with nutrients to nourish the body, rather than processed foods.

Those going red for women's health included Annie Walker and Kevin Macero, event co-chairmen, Sue and John Scott, Nassima and Sharif Omar, Joe Mueller, Suzy and Chuck Fehlig, Heather Mason-White, Biffy Fletcher and Jennifer Hawkins.

Dress for Success Northwest Arkansas welcomed guests Feb. 23 to their boutique in Rogers for the second annual wine tasting fundraiser. The group outfits unemployed or underemployed women when they land job interviews and helps with a second outfit when they get the job. Germann said since opening the boutique in August 2013 through January, 668 women have been served.

Next up for the organization is the Executive Friendraiser on April 26 at Four Points by Sheraton in Bentonville.

Among those joining Dress for Success for the wine tasting were Celia Swanson, Tracy Lieberman, Marie Clapper, Lisa Kelly, Matt Milbrodt, Tina Winham, Kristin Frei, Lela Davidson, Caroline Magee, Dennetta Bradford and Cindy Kaiser.
