On Christianity

DEAR REV. GRAHAM: If you were to ask me what I believe about God, I'd probably have to say that I'm an atheist. I know some atheists are very belligerent and aren't open to believing in God, but I'm not like that. Can you give me any reason to believe in God?

-- L.R.McD.

DEAR L.R.McD.: I'm thankful for your honesty, and also for your openness because you're right: not everyone who denies that God exists is willing to change. But you aren't this way, and Jesus' promise is for you: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find" (Matthew 7:7).

Let me give you two reasons for believing in God. The first is that He not only exists, but He has revealed Himself to us. God hasn't hidden Himself in some distant corner of the universe. He has shown Himself to us, if we only have the eyes to see it. He has done this first of all in nature, in the world He created. How else can we explain the beauty and the complexity of our world? As the Bible says, "Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities -- his eternal power and divine nature -- have been clearly seen" (Romans 1:20).

But the second reason is because He has done something we can barely understand: He became a man. That man was Jesus Christ, who came down from Heaven and showed us God's love. Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus Christ, for He was God in human flesh.

And once you see Christ, you'll realize not only that God exists, but that He loves you and wants you to come to know Him personally. Don't live in doubt any longer, but open your life to Christ today.
