Man found dead in White River in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- Police are investigating the death of a man found in the White River on Sunday night.

Sgt. Craig Stout said in an email Monday police don't know who the man is or his approximate age.

He was white and had tattoos, Stout said. There are "no obvious signs of physical trauma" to the body, according to a police news release.

The man could have been in the water for a couple of days, Stout said.

A fisherman found the body around 7:18 p.m. Sunday about a half mile from Harvey Dowell Road Bridge on Washington County 195 just off Arkansas 16, according to information in the news release and Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kelly Cantrell.

Sheriff's Office deputies responded first but found the body in the city limits, Stout said. Fayetteville police were called at 9:36 p.m. Cantrell referred further questions about the case to the Fayetteville Police Department.

The body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine cause of death and identify the man, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
