Lane shift to slow traffic on U.S. 70

Work on U.S. 70 in Saline County will require shifting traffic to newly built lanes this week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The eastbound and westbound lanes will alternately be closed as crews transition traffic onto the newly constructed pavement between Caney Creek Bridge and the Interstate 30/U.S. 70 interchange beginning Monday and lasting through Friday.

Intermittent flagging operations will control traffic as crews make the transition within this work area, the department said. This lane shift allows the contractor to continue widening the roadway.

Motorists should consider alternate routes during construction, including U.S. 270, the department said.

This work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen 17.5 miles of U.S. 70 to five lanes between I-30 in Benton and U.S. 70B in Hot Springs. The route is two lanes with some passing lanes. The project is expected to be finished in late 2018, the department said.
