Work to shut lane on U.S. 70 stretch

Work on U.S. 70 in Garland County will require an eastbound lane closure for five days beginning today, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Traffic will be reduced to one direction between Ohana Terrace and the U.S. 70 rest area from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Tuesday, weather permitting.

Traffic will be reduced to one direction in this area during the intermittent lane closure and it will be controlled by flaggers and barrels. The department said motorists should consider alternate routes, including U.S. 270.

The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen 17.5 miles of U.S. 70 to five lanes between Interstate 30 and U.S. 70B in Hot Springs. The route now is two lanes with some passing lanes. The project is expected to be completed late next year, the department said.
