Bid to gain FEMA's $600,000 advances

The City Council on Monday approved allowing the city to accept a $600,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant for the Fire Department to purchase thermal imaging cameras and self-contained breathing apparatus units with additional masks.

The Fire Department's application to FEMA has been approved for the purchase. The city must agree to pay a match of $60,000 to receive the grant.

The city has available money in Arkansas Act 833 funds to cover its share, according to the proposed legislation. Act 833 is funding through the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management that is to be used for training, firefighting equipment and capital construction or improvements of fire departments.

Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to "see" through darkness or smoke or to see the heat signature of visually obscured victims, according to information with the legislation.

City attorney now now at 116 Main St.

The relocation of the city attorney's offices was completed this week.

The offices moved from City Hall, 300 Main St., to the former Community Development building, 116 Main St.

The City Council approved $100,000 in February for the building's renovation and upgraded security for the city attorney's move. Renovations included new flooring, roof repairs, painting, mechanical work and replacement of the front door with a more secure and electronically controlled entry.

Taking over the former city attorney space will be communications director Nathan Hamilton, special-projects director Jim Billings and Fit 2 Live director Isaac Henry, who currently have offices in another part of City Hall.
