Municipal League opens convention

The Arkansas Municipal League opened its three-day, 83rd Convention on Wednesday at the Statehouse Convention Center and Marriott Hotel in Little Rock.

More than 1,300 mayors, aldermen, and other city and town leaders from across the state have registered to attend.

Municipal officials will elect new officers, update the Municipal League's policies and goals, and discuss state and federal legislation and issues affecting towns and cities.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson will speak at 11:15 a.m. today. An awards ceremony will be held Friday.

Other speakers include state Treasurer Dennis Milligan; Attorney General Leslie Rutledge; Lisa Soronen of the State and Local Legal Center; author and motivational speaker Neal Petersen; and Housing and Urban Development Region VI Administrator Beth Van Duyne.

Major topics will include the state's new gun laws, the medical marijuana amendment and an overview of the 91st General Assembly. Workshops will include information security and data recovery, preparing for the 2020 Census, and creating a safe workplace.

The Arkansas Municipal League, a service and advocacy organization, offers programs and services to all 500 cities and towns in the state. It was started in 1934.
