Bernadette Holt, 33, plans to graduate from Northwest Arkansas Community College with an associate's degree in business, thanks to support from the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas. Her original plan meant getting a job after earning that degree. But Holt changed her mind when she discovered she flourished as she sought education. She said the new plan calls for graduating from NWACC and continuing her studies at a (university) and earning a bachelor's degree.

The Single Parent Scholarship Fund helps single parents in Carroll, Madison and Washington counties and each year awards approximately $350,000 in scholarships to 135 recipients. Along with money for school, the group helps recipients with living expenses and provides a mentoring program and other support for recipients and their families until the students graduate.
