20 YEARS STRONG

18 former CARTI patients get Jungmeyer Scholarships

The latest round of Jungmeyer Scholarships was handed out to pediatric cancer survivors May 31 at the Governor's Mansion. This marks the 20th year the stipends were given in the name of Dennis Jungmeyer, director emeritus of the CARTI Foundation board of directors. He's a prostate cancer survivor who saw the pediatric cancer patients coming and going in the waiting room while he received his own treatments.

First lady Susan Hutchinson helped CARTI personnel hand out 18 scholarships worth $3,500 each. Recipients, all of whom had cancer as children, were of all ages and from across the state and beyond. All had received cancer treatment at CARTI.

Jungmeyer Scholarship recipients for 2017 are Heidi Abston of Searcy; Elijah Barnes of Mena; Brayden Beshears of Greenwood; Lucas Cauthren of Subiaco; Creed Chapman of Norfork; Shelby Clinton of North Little Rock; Spencer Ewing of Little Rock; Haley Goodwin and CheyAnn Trantham of Conway; Ty Granberry of New Boston, Texas; Keori Guinn of Hot Springs; Cheryl Harp of Bentonville; Caleb Loe of Prescott; Patrik Rollefson of Paron; Breanna Stoufer of Fort Smith; Tasha Turner of Pocahontas; Chase Wellenberger of England; and Kirsten Worley of Benton.

All had cookies, candy, lemonade and punch to enjoy before the awards. Tables were centered with tall glass vases holding white hydrangeas and red roses.

Jungmeyer was introduced at the event by Rolando Dupress of Little Rock, a scholar from about 15 years ago who spoke about the lasting effects the scholarship and Jungmeyer have had on his academic and professional careers. He's now a radiology technician.

Mark V. Williamson and John Youngblood were recipients of the 2017 Z. Lynn Zeno Award, which recognizes outstanding philanthropic leadership and volunteerism on behalf of CARTI Kids.

The CARTI Foundation was incorporated in 1983 as a nonprofit organization to assist CARTI in meeting the current and future needs of Arkansas cancer patients and their families.
