Blasts on U.S. 70 to delay all traffic

Rock blasting along U.S. 70 in Garland County will require closing all lanes for 15-minute intervals for five days next week beginning Monday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Workers will close one lane per day for up to 15 minutes between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily through Friday, weather permitting. Lanes will be closed three-quarters of a mile west of Summit Ridge Road to a quarter mile west of the road, the department said. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

Motorists should consider alternate routes during construction, including U.S. 270, the department said.

The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen U.S. 70 to five lanes from two with some passing lanes between Interstate 30 in Benton and U.S. 70B in Hot Springs. The project is expected to be completed in late 2018, the department said.
