FORT SMITH -- Whether or not any woman can lick the daylight out of her husband in case the husband deserves a licking, Police Judge T. A. Bayley did not state, but so far as Savannah Gatewood, negress, is concerned, she may lambast her better half, well-known Criminal Court character, as long as she has strength. Gatewood for years has been making frequent appearances in police and justice courts to answer charges of beating his wife. When his wife told Judge Bayley in Police Court today how she bruised him with a bar of iron while he was asleep, because he had mistreated her, the court fined Gatewood $25, committed him to jail, and dismissed the negress.

• Of the 40 students who are to be graduated Sunday from the University of Arkansas School of Pharmacy, eight were eligible for membership in the Beta Iota Chapter of the Rho Chi Society, an honorary scholastic fraternity. Of the eight, Charles K. Born of Arkadelphia and Cheryl January McNabb of Little Rock will be graduated with highest honors. Jim Morse of Danville, Jerry Stamps of Berryville, Carl Weber of Rogers, Ronald Robertson of Little Rock, Lloyd Rausher of Clarendon, and Neil Vick of England, will be graduated with honors.

• About 220 pounds of cocaine was found concealed in a truck Friday by Arkansas State Police in St. Francis County, U.S. Attorney Chuck Banks said Monday. The substance was found in a hidden compartment under the bed of the truck when a trooper made a routine traffic check on Interstate 40 near Forrest City, Banks said. A field test indicated the substance was cocaine. Banks described the drug bust as the largest ever in the Eastern District of Arkansas and estimated the cocaine to be worth $10 million.

• A prosecutor filed a negligent-homicide charge Friday against a Russellville woman already accused of drunken driving in a wreck that killed 24-year-old Brittany Pennington, whose life had been marred by personal tragedy. Janell Honaker, 28, was the driver of a Jeep that ran off Interstate 40 and overturned near Atkins at 4:15 a.m. May 20, according to the Arkansas State Police. Pennington and another woman were passengers. Honaker wasn't injured and the second woman wasn't badly hurt, state police said.
