NWA Democrat-Gazette/FLIP PUTTHOFF Fire and law enforcement personnel work Tuesday along Canal Street in the Monte Ne community after a Benton County street sweeper hit a home. Two people were taken to a hospital, said Channing Barker, Road Department spokeswoman.

MONTE NE -- An adult and infant were hospitalized Tuesday after a street sweeper crashed into their home about 6:50 a.m., officials said.

Benton County crews have been cleaning roads and filling pot holes in the area and the machine, which has been referred to as a street sweeper, was on a hill on Bonnabel Road, Communications Director Channing Barker said.

Arkansas Sate Police are investigating the incident.

The machine gained speed going down Bonnabel, said Rogers Fire Chief Tom Jenkins, before launching from the Canal intersection into the one-story house, which is lower than street level.

Rogers Fire Department was first on the scene. The machine pinned an infant and woman believed to be her mother, Jenkins said. Another child who was in the home was uninjured.

It took about 30 minutes to free the woman and infant as the emergency responders carefully monitored the integrity of the house and worked to not further injure the two who were trapped while moving the heavy machinery, Jenkins said. Their injuries were considered serious, he said. One was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital, and the other was driven to a hospital.

The worker driving the machine was treated and released at a hospital, Barker said.

The names of the injured weren't released.
