RockHounds manage to hold off Travs

ROCKHOUNDS 7, TRAVELERS 5

Midland catcher Beau Taylor went 3 for 4, while designated hitter B.J. Boyd and third baseman Jermaine Curtis both went 2 for 5 as the RockHounds built an early lead and survived a late rally Wednesday in a 7-5 victory over the Arkansas Travelers in front of an announced crowd of 2,566 at Security Bank Ballpark in Midland, Texas.

Curtis and right fielder Tyler Marincov hit RBI doubles for the RockHounds in the first inning and shortstop Yairo Munoz added his third home run of the season to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Travelers third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean hit an RBI groundout in the fourth inning to score designated hitter Dario Pizzano and cut the lead to 3-1. Beau Taylor hit an RBI single and second baseman J.P. Sportman added his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-1 for the RockHounds. The Travs cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth when center fielder Chuck Taylor's RBI single scored shortstop Jeff Kobernus.

Midland added some insurance when Beau Taylor scored on a wild pitch by Arkansas reliever Austin Kubitza in the sixth inning and Sportman added an RBI single in the seventh for a 7-2 lead.

The Travs rallied in the top of the eighth, getting an RBI single from right fielder Kyle Waldrop and a two-run home run by catcher Tyler Marlette, his fifth of the season, which cut the lead to 7-5.

Chuck Taylor was 3 for 5 with 1 RBI to lead the Travelers, who finished with 15 hits and left 7 runners on base, while Waldrop, Marlette and first baseman Kyle Petty all finished 2 for 4. Pizzano went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored.

Arkansas starter Lindsey Caughel (3-6) took the loss after allowing Midland's five runs in the first and fourth innings. All 5 runs were earned on 11 hits with 4 strikeouts over 5 innings.

Midland starter Evan Manarino (1-0) got the victory after allowing 2 earned runs on 9 hits with 1 strikeout in 6 innings.

ROUGHRIDERS 13, NATURALS 2

The Frisco RoughRiders scored 12 runs in the first 3 innings, including a 6-run third inning, in Wednesday's victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in front of 4,192 fans at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas.

An RBI double by Peter O'Brien gave Frisco a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The RoughRiders then scored 5 runs in the third inning, getting 2 off 4 consecutive singles and a 3-run home run from Andy Ibanez. The six runs in the third inning came on home runs from Eric Aguilera, Jose Cardona and a three-run shot from Ibanez to left field on a 2-1 pitch.

Northwest Arkansas got its two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Eller Hernandez led the inning off with his fourth double of the season and moved to third on a single by Corey Toups. Hernandez scored on Samir Duenez's RBI single and Toups scored on Alfredo Escalera's RBI groundout.

Nick Dini led the Naturals by going 2 for 3, while Duenez went 2 for 4.

Ibanez, who finished with 6 RBI on the 2 home runs, and Cardona both went 4 for 5 to lead the RoughRiders.
