MADAME PRESIDENT

Phi Delta Kappa convenes in LR, gets new president

It's official: Etta Carter of Little Rock has taken over the helm as "supreme basileus," or national president, of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc.

The sorority of female educators held its 94th conclave in Little Rock earlier this month, with the theme "Embracing the Standards, Raising the Bar: Narratives of Bravery and Hope." The final event of the conclave was the Calla Lily Awards Banquet, held July 20 in the Wally Allen Ballroom of the Statehouse Convention Center. The biennial event was hosted by Little Rock-based Gamma Nu Chapter members.

Among those extending greetings to the group were state Sen. Joyce Elliott and Deborah Bledsoe, Gamma Nu Chapter president, along with outgoing national president Charlotte M. Williams of Baltimore. Awards included national scholarships from the group's Perpetual Scholarship Foundation and a number of special presentations by Williams. Highlighting the event were vocal performances by the Conclave Chorus and the National Anthropos, the men's auxiliary group. A special treat came in the form of various tributes to Williams from representatives of the sorority's five regions.

Members of the Gamma Nu Chapter, which got its start in 1968 and is part of the Southwest Region, were lauded for their work as event hostesses. Carter was introduced as the new national head of the sorority. A Philander Smith College graduate who joined the sorority in 1980, Carter worked as a teacher and administrator in Chicago and New York.
