Canoeing, stream fishing program offered to women

Women who want to learn more about canoeing and how to fish an Ozarks stream should sign up for the Missouri Department of Conservation's "Discover Nature: Women's Canoeing and Stream Fishing" program set for Aug. 1.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and consists of a five-mile guided float trip down a portion of the James River near Springfield, Mo. Department staff will accompany floaters and offer on-the-water instruction and assistance throughout the trip.

Transportation to and from the river will be provided. Participants will meet at the Missouri Department of Conservation's southwest regional office, 2630 N. Mayfair Ave., in Springfield.

The trip is for women ages 14 and up. Ages 14-17 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Participants age 16 and over must possess a valid Missouri fishing license. Women who don't have resident fishing permits may purchase a single-day fishing permit.

Participants are responsible for their own lunch and refreshments. Women can bring their own fishing equipment or use equipment provided by department. No alcohol is allowed.
