July 22, 1917
• Mayor Charles E. Taylor was cut twice with a small pocket knife and slightly injured by Dr. W. H. Taylor, a retired physician living at 115 Arch street, about 10 o'clock yesterday morning. The affair occurred at Second and Louisiana street, during a fight, following an argument about stories concerning the character of the mayor that had been circulated during his trip to New York. Mayor Taylor issued a public statement, vigorously denying the truth of the rumors.

• With a herd of goats, two hound dogs, and about 40 spectators looking on, the Port of Little Rock was dedicated Friday. While the goats milled curiously around the site, Mayor Borchert, members of the Port Authority, Colonel Frank P. Bane, the Army district engineer, and City Manager Ancil M. Douthit turned the traditional first spades of dirt. The 151-acre site, located 5.3 miles downstream from the Freeway Bridge, is at the end of Shelby Drive off Plantation Drive.

• A state prison inmate remains at large after escaping from a holding cell shortly after his parole was revoked Monday morning, officials said. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of Bobby L. Fountain, 28, of Little Rock, Department of Correction spokesman David White said Tuesday. White said there is no reason to believe Fountain -- who has a checkered parole history -- would be armed and dangerous. "We did notify law enforcement officials of the circumstances and of the warrant that has been issued for him," White said.

• Six people died Friday in vehicle accidents across Arkansas, including one in which a man fled from sheriff's deputies. Benjamin Thomas Webb, 28, of Conway was wanted on a warrant revoking his parole and had ingredients to make methamphetamine in his 1990 Ford van when Faulkner County sheriff's deputies tried to pull him over on Arkansas 286 not long after 11:30 p.m., the sheriff's office said. Alone in the van, Webb began to slow down as if he was pulling over, then accelerated, at times driving nearly 70 mph through rural areas, according to the office.
