Decatur passes parking lot ordinance

DECATUR — The City Council reviewed guidelines recently governing the use of the downtown public parking lot.

In April, the city signed a lease with Kansas City Southern Railroad for land from Roller Avenue to the south end of the train display area.

Since the downtown area is short of parking along the businesses on South Main Street near the depot, the council decided to designate the lot behind the meat market from the north side of the depot storage shed to Roller Avenue as public parking.

The ordinance, which establishes a two-hour parking limit and allocates two spaces for the businesses adjacent to the lot, was passed on the first reading. The council will take up the second reading during its Aug. 21 meeting.

Mayor Bob Tharp told the council work on the second phase of the city sidewalk project was to begin this week.

The first phase of the sidewalk project, running from downtown to Decatur Middle School, was completed in 2015.

The second phase will run along the west side of East Roller Avenue from the corner of Bredehoeft Road to the point where the 2015 work ended and from Austin Avenue to the parking lot at Veterans Park.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
