Arkansan's body recovered in river

The body of a Polk County man who was last seen on Wednesday was found on the other side of the state Saturday night in Chicot County.

A news release from the Polk County sheriff's office said the body was that of Kevin Birdwell, 51, formerly of Springhill, La.

The sheriff's office, U.S. Forest Service and others searched Birdwell's property and the surrounding Ouachita National Forest land after Birdwell was reported missing Friday, the release said.

Chicot County Sheriff Ronald Nichols said a fisherman found Birdwell's body about 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Mississippi River southeast of Eudora.

Nichols said he couldn't tell how Birdwell died. The body has been sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for autopsy.

Polk County and Chicot County sheriff's offices and the Arkansas State Police are participating in a joint investigation, according to a statement from the Polk County sheriff's office.
