Work to close U.S. 70 lanes

Construction on U.S. 70 in Garland and Saline counties will require lane closures for much of the next three months, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Beginning today and lasting through April 14, the contractor will be installing concrete median barriers, milling pavement and placing temporary roadway striping at multiple areas along the highway. The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen 17 miles of Interstate 30 between I-30 and Hot Springs.

The department said the lane closures will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, weather permitting, and will alternatingly affect eastbound and westbound traffic at the following locations:

• Jaguar Trail to a half mile east of Java Road.

• One-eighth mile west of Cedar Creek Road to the Cedar Creek Bridge.

• Bell Tower Access Road to one-quarter mile east of the Bell Tower Access Road.

• One-eighth mile west and east of Summit Ridge Road.

• Ten Mile Creek Bridge to a half mile east of Kayce Lane.

• One-quarter mile east of County Road 1379 to Antique Mall.

• A half mile east of the Narrows Road to one-eighth mile west of 10 Mile Creek Bridge.

Construction zone signs and barrels will be used to alert traffic approaching the work zone, but the Highway Department encouraged drivers to consider using alternate routes, including U.S. 270, during the construction period. The department also noted that traveling in the work zones requires reduced speeds and that fines for speeding are double in work zones.
