Many Americans happy a new captain is in charge

Coralie Koonce (Letters, Jan. 9) has joined the sore loser club that is certain the end is near and that "Trump's crew may helm a sinking ship." Obama and Hillary shipwrecked the Democratic Party and Coralie does a siren call for the scuttling of the new Republican fleet before it even leaves the harbor.

Coralie's first attack is on Vice President-elect Mike Pence for his scary Christian morality and belief in the sanctity of human life. She goes on with accusations about the Trump cabinet picks that make them seem like a wild bunch of desperadoes set out to rape and pillage the world. What I see is a group of highly respected and successful men and women willing to question the status quo and to put America first. We hear a lot about fake news today and we will see much more of it from the left from their anger at losing this election.

Koonce talks about the Jolly Roger being flown next to the Stars and Stripes and she is right about that. Many of those who ran the last fleet ashore will run amok as pirates sniping at the new fleet trying to run it aground for political purposes. The good news is these pirates have only small boats to attack from. If you look at the electoral map it looks like a large red image splashed with a little blue. Trump won the electoral vote and we need to take a close look at the popular vote. If left coast California's margin was discounted, Trump would have won the popular vote.

The last administration left us with an anemic economy where the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. In disrespect for the current administration, our enemies brazenly harass our military in the air and on the sea, like bullies kicking sand in the face of a weakling. Riots occur across the country as businesses and homes are burned to the ground by criminals who say they want justice. Police officers are targeted and assassinated in cities big and small. I could go, on but it will mean little to the radical left as Obama leaves office telling us what a wonderful job he has done.

I don't know if the Trump administration will accomplish all of its campaign promises but it will be refreshing to see some shake ups on both sides of the political aisle. I am impressed with Trump's cabinet picks and believe the new administration will be good for the economy and will bring this nation back to a leadership role in the world. The crew will be hired in spite of low-level attacks by the Democrats and small groups of protesters, and most of us will be glad we signed up for this cruise.

In Fayetteville, just fix what isn't working

The Jan. 14 article "True Sustainability" by Peter Nierengarten was very well written and presented. From reading this, I gather our main recycling problem is with "large businesses and multi-family housing" -- of which I would think the biggest problem comes from "multi-family housing."

Two options we might consider would be to (1) leave the single-family recycling program as it is since it is so successful, and (2) establish an additional program that would better solve the problem of multi-family residential complexes. Also, since our city is so keen on "multi-family" units, maybe we should charge them to cover the extra cost of handling their "trash and recycling program."

I cannot conceive how the proposed single-stream recycling program can be an effective method of handling trash. The process might "double the volume of recyclable materials collected," but what good is the material -- and how much did it cost to separate the contaminated trash?
