• The city of Malvern has taken steps to retain federal flood insurance for its residents, Mayor Steve Northcutt says. "We've addressed each issue" that the Federal Emergency Management Agency raised in early January, the mayor said in an interview last week. FEMA notified the Hot Spring County city of roughly 9,000 that it had until March 6 to correct problems with floodplain management, or it would face probation and possible suspension from the National Flood Insurance Program. The result for anyone seeking flood insurance would be a $50 surcharge on each insurance policy for at least a year.
